If you have a Body Mass Index of 28 to 35(+) then you are a classic candidate for the BIB Intra - Gastric Balloon, whereas if you have a Body Mass Index of 35 to 50 then the Gastric Band (otherwise known as the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band) would, in most cases, be the procedure to choose (however, we do have people who have a BMI of 35+ who elect to have the Gastric Balloon inserted rather than the Gastric band, for a variety of reasons)
Another way to look at it, to assist you, is to consider how much weight you actually need (or want) to lose? For example, if your target weight loss is 2 to 4 stones, then the Gastric Balloon would be the natural choice. If however, your target weight loss is 6 to 12+ stones over a period of 1 to 3 years, then the Gastric Band would be the natural choice.
There is of course a 'middle ground' between the two procedures, where a client may have a target weight loss of between 5 to 6 stones and prefer the Gastric Balloon option, this is not unusual, as many clients in this category will lose the bulk of their weight loss target whilst their Gastric Balloon is in place and then go on to lose more weight after their balloon extraction (after 6 months) following the principles and new habits they learned during the 6 month Gastric Balloon insertion period, this is not uncommon.
We would advise that if your weight loss goal is more than 6 or 7 stones that the Gastric Band may be your best option.
